Cave Renovation and Fruit Harvest
Cave Renovation and Fruit Harvest – “What you plant, you or others will harvest”
Place: Daher’s Vineyard, Tent of Nations Farm
Dates (2017): 19th – 30th June
Number of Volunteers: 25
Accommodation: Volunteers will sleep in tents at the farm campsite
Project Details: Volunteers will help with cleaning, renovating, painting and decorating some of the caves on Daher’s Vineyard. The caves which you will be working on are centuries old and each have their own character and history, making this a unique and stimulating programme to participate in. It takes a long time to make the caves into livable areas, but as the work progresses, you will be able to see the results and the beauty in these caves and their stones. During the camp, you will also assist with the harvesting of some of the farm’s fruit trees. The programme will include a series of lectures which will give volunteers an understanding about caves in general, the caves on Daher’s Vineyard in particular, and how to go about the renovation work. Participation in this programme will also give volunteers the opportunity to explore Bethlehem and its surroundings and learn about the land situation here at the Nassar family farm, and in wider Palestine. In the evening, volunteers can enjoy spending time around the campfire.
Useful Guidelines: It will be important that you get enough sleep each night of the camp as this type of work usually starts very early in the morning to avoid the heat later in the day.
Weather (June): The weather is mostly hot, dry and dusty, with temperatures between 22º-27º. On the Vineyard it is usually hot during the day, but can get chilly in the evening.
Participation Fee: 150 Euros. This amount covers food, accommodation, lectures and different programs and activities. However, it doesn’t cover field trips. Please see our volunteers page for more information about our running costs.
Please Note: Participants are expected to pay for their flights and to cover their own health insurance.
Food: Traditional Palestinian meals will be prepared for volunteers at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase from the snack bar. Please inform us of any dietary requirements.
